What are the types of PTE exam?
The PTE exam is conducted in 3 formats: PTE Academic Exam, PTE General Exam, PTE young learners.
- PTE Academic: This test can be taken throughout the year as per the test taker’s convenience and available dates. The candidate’s reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are tested in this test format. The test is delivered on a computer at a secured exam center. The validity of the scores is 2 years.

- PTE General: This test can be taken 3 times a year viz. May, June, and December. You can check the available dates from PTE official website. This test consists of two parts: a written paper and spoken test like an interview, where both parts evaluate the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills of the test taker with a more realistic approach. The test format involves six different proficiency levels designed to test and approve the general English language abilities of the test taker. The score is valid for a lifetime.
- PTE young learners: This test is designed for children from 6 – 13 years. It includes story writing, picture matching, group speaking section, and board game, tec. It is a fun test
involving real-life scenarios to evaluate the English language skills of the children in a stress-free way. The score is valid for a lifetime.
The PTE exam fees vary from country to country. In case you book your PTE exam within 48 hours of the test date, then you have to pay more than the usual fees.

- The test taker must be at least 18 years of age. If anyone below 18 years wants to take the PTE exam he has to produce a parental consent letter signed by his parents or guardian before appearing for the test.
- A person from any country can appear for the PTE exam.
- There are no educational qualifications as such, prescribed by Pearson PLC group, conducting body of the PTE exam.
- Also, there are no limits on taking the PTE exam; however, the test can be taken with a gap of 5 days.
What is the exam pattern for PTE?
The PTE Academic consists of three major sections:
- Speaking and Writing (77 to 93 minutes):
You will be given a prompt text and you have to record your answer in the allotted time. The test taker’s conversing, interacting, grammar and spellings skills are tested in this section. The whole section and time is distributed into the following divisions:-
- Personal introduction – 55 seconds[ 25 seconds- prompt, 30 seconds- record]
- Read aloud – 30 to 40 seconds to prepare for reading [60 words]
- Repeat sentence – 15 seconds[3-9 seconds -prompt, 15 seconds- record]
- Describe image – 25 seconds to examine the image and prepare a response.
- Re-tell lecture – 140 seconds[90 seconds- prompt, 10 seconds-prepare, 40 seconds-answer]
- Answer short question – 20 seconds[3-9 seconds -prompt, 10 seconds- record answer]
- Summarize written text – 10 minutes [text prompt-300 words]
- Essay – 20 minutes [text prompt of 2-3 sentences.
- Reading (32 – 41 minutes):
This section tests the test taker’s ability to understand the language through reading. The questions are combined in a way to test the individualistic skills of the test taker.

- Re-order Paragraphs – Passage reading (150 words)
- Reading: fill in the blanks – Passage reading(80 words)

- Listening (45 – 57 minutes):
This section tests the test taker’s ability to promptness in understanding spoken English and summarizing the same. The questions are in the form of audio and video clips and played only once.
- Summarize spoken text – 60-90 seconds to hear prompt (50 to 70 words), 10 minutes for writing.
- Multiple choices, multiple answers – 40-90 seconds for prompt
- Fill in the blanks – 30-60 seconds
- Highlight correct summary – 30-90 seconds
- Multiple choices, single answer – 30-60 seconds
- Select missing word – 20-70 seconds
- Highlight incorrect words – 15-50 seconds
What is the passing score for PTE?
There is no passing score for the PTE exam. However, from the total range of 10-90, a score of 50-63 is considered competent. For better and standard university options, it is expected to score in the range of 65-75 or above.

Australia, USA, UK, Ireland, Singapore, Canada, New Zealand are some countries that accept the PTE exam and are popular within non-native aspirants who desire to go for studies or immigration purposes.
